Holding Large Payouts for Review

Last updated September 26, 2026

Most commissions are small and routine, and they should flow straight into your next payout run. A few deserve a look first: a large hotel commission on a room block that was never invoiced with client detail, or the first big payout to an advisor you haven't paid much before. The review hold catches those automatically so nobody has to spot them by eye.

Off until you turn it on. Nothing about your payouts changes until an owner or admin enables it. Turning it off again frees everything it was holding at once.

Turning it on

Go to Commissions → Payouts and open Settings on the Review hold card at the top of the page. There are three settings:

SettingWhat it does
Any booking over ($)Holds any booking where the advisor's payout is over this amount. Suggested: $2,000.
Advisor's first booking at ($)Holds an advisor's first booking whose payout is at or over this amount. Suggested: $1,000.
Release on its own after (days)If set, a held commission releases itself after this many days. Leave it empty and only a person can release it.

Leave either amount empty to switch that rule off. Click Check what it would hold to see how many commissions waiting to be paid right now would be held, and for how much, before you save.

How the amounts are measured

  • Per booking, not per line. The amount is the advisor's share of all the commission received on one booking. A booking paid across two statements is judged on the total, not on each piece.
  • Not per payout run. Twenty small commissions that add up to a big payout are not held. The hold is about one large booking, not a busy month.
  • "First" ignores smaller payouts. An advisor who has only ever been paid $25 is still on their "first" large booking. The rule looks for an earlier booking at or over the amount that was paid or released.

What turning it on does to your current queue

Saving with the hold on also checks every commission already waiting to be paid, including payouts that are awaiting approval and payouts Dots refused that are waiting for a retry. Anything the rules catch is held straight away, so "on" means on for today's queue as well as for new money.

Reviewing and releasing

Held commissions are listed on the Review hold card at the top of Payouts. For each one you see the advisor, the amount, the supplier, the client and confirmation, and why it was held. A counter shows how long it has been waiting and, if you set an auto-release, how many days are left.

Click Release once you've checked it. The commission joins the next payout run like any other. Release all releases the whole list at once. JourneyFuse records who released each one and when.

In the Ready to pay list, a held commission shows a Held · review badge and is left out of that advisor's payout. Their other commissions still go.

What stops a held commission being paid

The hold is enforced by the system, not only by the screen:

  • A held commission cannot be recorded as paid by any route: a single payout, Approve & send all, a split payout, or a manual record.
  • A Dots payout that already contains a held commission will not send until you release it. That covers a payout awaiting approval and a retry after a refused send.

What the advisor sees

In the advisor portal the commission shows as Received · In review, with no payout date. That tells them the money arrived and your agency is reviewing it. It does not mention the amount rule or why the commission was held.

Who can change it

Only owners and admins can change the settings and release held commissions. Other team members can see the card but have no Release button.
